telling yourself to remember to smile

seeing
the way that dust particles
slowly drop in the still heavy air
always
you see in the
shallowly angled sunlight
as they are
struck by fire
careening into your eyes
spinning in moved air
circling
rising
and falling
but always they are
falling
seem to be waiting
given pause
as they hold to descend
bearing down
a language heavy on me
work tiring me
and the people
the people most of all
dragging at my pant legs
sometimes
right in the middle of a short
walk
or a drive
the particles gather to
stab me
start me
wondering why I should
stop when I arrive
how it might be
if I just kept moving
with the circling
making the ground
underneath
soft thin
and brittle
sand then
tar then
smog
I could drop into it
twisting
caught up in the lightless
celebration
of release
but sinking still
falling
falling
into the blacktop

Smile and it will all go away
Smile, and it will all go away
Simple solution in neon lights
Are you sad?
Smile
Feeling down?
Smile
Have a problem?
Smile
It will all go away
It is in everything I do
Emotions are felt in solitude
No one knows
No one wants to hear
No one needs to see
There are days when I forget to smile
