She looked up at him, staring intently.
The kindness in his eyes betrayed everything he presented to the world.
The sliver of humility in his grin
was a failure in his pretenses.
She hated herself for seeing these things;
she wished his presence away.
Glancing away, it was all she could do to keep from allowing her feelings
to tumble out in to the void of silence between them. Not
that she would even know where to begin.
It was difficult enough for her to comprehend
the sensations she felt around him.
She couldn’t imagine trying to make sense of it out loud.

I think I've experienced that moment a few times. Reading the first few lines I actually felt my chest expand in that familiar way when I'm confronted by something so undeniable and complex. At least, that's what this piece said to me.
By far my favourite line: "The sliver of humility in his grin / was a failure in his pretenses." And it makes me wonder if she really does see these positive things in him, or if she's just wishing they were there.
